From humble beginnings…
Serious Writers Block was founded by father and son team, Michael and Alex Courter, with the mission of helping writers become serious so they can share their stories, and message, and leave a lasting legacy.
After reaching their goal of becoming published authors, Mike and Alex created Serious Writers Block to help writers tackle the problems we all face on the author’s journey. Some of which include skill building topics like grammar and character development, all the way to conquering our doubt and fears, and truly believing in ourselves and our desire to write.
The name “Serious Writers Block” is a wordplay with dual meaning, not only being a play on having a serious case of writer’s block but also being a “block of serious writers,” referring to the community of authors and beginners alike that we aim to build, all of whom want to earnestly hone their skills. And no, we do not call them blockheads so don’t even think about it.
Michael Courter
Starting out as a fledgling writer of fiction, scribbling short stories on wide ruled yellow notepaper with a pen at the age of eight years old, Michael Courter has developed his talent and honed his skills as a writer and storyteller over the past 30 years.
Even while working 60 – 100 hours a week in Information Technology, he still found time to write during lunch breaks, evenings, and on the commute to and from his New York offices.
Along the way, He’s managed to be the proud author of (10?) novels, 1 novel co-written with fellow author Sasha Raught, 1 screenplay, and countless short stories. He has completed many a challenge by winning 5 nanowrimo contests, a camp nanowrimo contest, ScriptFrenzy,
And being a finalist for 2 consecutive 3-day novel contests.
His writing is as eclectic as his tastes: to date, he has written fantasy novels, psychological thrillers, dark famedies—"famedy" is his term for fantasy comedy, and historical fiction.
He is a frequent attendee of writing clubs and contests. Michael fervently embraces the adventure of writing amongst friends.
In 2012 Michael Courter launched Last Quarter of the Moon publishing(C). his own publishing company by which he published his own novel, “Have You Seen Her?” as well as Alex Courter’s debut novel, “Return of the Dragon Knights”, Sasha Raught’s “Tempting Fate can be Dangerous”, and Anthezar’s short story, “The prince and the Time Keeper”.
Alex D.K. Courter
“I started creating the characters found in my book, Return of the Dragon Knights around the age of six. But it wasn’t until I read my father’s first novel that I decided I wanted to be a writer too. Through a journey developing a love for storytelling, starting at age 15, I have written over seven novels and a short horror story with many more on the way. My passion for the art of writing and storytelling has grown over the years, turning into a love for an art form that not only entertains people, but can teach them something important along the way. That’s why I write.”
“Once you start to take the authors journey, you might find challenges like doubt and discouragement in your path. I didn’t think I was good enough. I thought I would never be a good enough writer to complete a novel no less publish it, but once I found I had a passion for writing and storytelling, I had no reason to fear. Because I would work hard and grow. Likewise, if you have doubts, or if you’ve been discouraged, don’t let that stop you from asking yourself why you want to write. Don’t let doubt in your skills or ability stop you. Learn and grow from mistakes, read as much as you can in your genre to discover more about the art. Listen to critique with an open yet discerning mind. Do these things and like me you’ll be surprised at what you’ll be capable of.”
“I’ve struggled a lot on my way. From doubting myself and my abilities to being told things like “Your idea isn’t original enough.” or “The genre is overdone.” Basically, all those two statements told me was I would never publish and sell my book. Well, I proved them wrong and I conquered my doubts. You can too. So, find your Motivation, discover your Passion, and Dedicate yourself to becoming a Serious Writer. Finally, let your Adventure begin.”
